TGE Trip 2018 – Day 3 8/22
Today, August 22nd, after learning about a fuel strike that was taking place in the morning we revised our schedule for the day and spent the morning at Morning Star and got to spend some more time with the kids. The kids all got to decorate and personalize their own painter’s hats and their designs were very impressive! As kids wrapped up that activity, Terri introduced them to some new (very loud) dice games that the kids could continue to play after we leave. Finally, we broke out the parachute and balloons for some more playtime. The morning reached it’s peak when the oh so tiny, fearless, Carol climbed into the parachute and had a ball being bounced around!
After lunch, we departed for Riruta Shade Orphanage. We had a warm welcome by the staff, children, and director. The children performed song and dance routines for us that they came up with themselves and they shared with us their dreams for the future. Many of the kids here dream of being doctors, dentists, engineers, teachers, and pilots. For our workshops, we made tie-dye, butterflies with the kids here and a new parachute made an reappearance for the second time today which the kids had a blast with. TGE presented a chicken coop project for them to raise chickens for sale to aid in the goal of self-sufficiency. We also presented them with gifts including medical supplies, soccer balls, Jenga, card games, jump rope, beach balls, colored pencils, Legos and we also left them the parachute and markers that we used in our workshops.
After a traffic-filled journey back to Morning Star we prepared for our trip tomorrow to Dream Children’s Home, the biggest orphanage that we will visit this week, enjoyed another delicious dinner courtesy of Benjamin and Panina, and joined the children for a movie.
